It's Been Awhile!

Recently, I made my first tentative steps into the world of dyeing. It was surprisingly easy! I used Kool-Aid and followed a couple of online tutorials. I'll post the links when I find them.

First I soaked some handspun:

While that was going on, I mixed the "dye" (pronounced: Kool-Aid). As always, I was shocked that people actually allow their kids to drink this stuff. Digital photography does not capture the un-natural (and unholy) colour!

Then I put the thoroughly wetted yarn into a large Ziploc bag and dumped in the colour. After squishing it around a bit, I stuck it in the microwave for 2 minutes (I didn't completely seal the bag...didn't want the thing to explode, after all!). Then I let it rest for 2 minutes. I repeated this process --heat, rest-- a couple more times until all of the colour was exhausted (which was cool!).

This is the finished result...a very pretty (and nice smelling) shade of blue). Once it cooled down, I rinsed it in warm water with some dishwashing liquid, then hung it up to dry.

Just in case you're interested, I used two packets of "Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade".

It was really fun! You should try it!

On a separate note, today I came into the possession of 2 beautiful alpaca fleeces! What a fabulous way to start the morning! Fresh coffee and 2 giant bags of fibre! I love it!

The darker of the two came from an alpaca named Casey and it has almost a reddish tint to it. The lighter one is from Princess. They're gorgeous!

Over Christmas, my fabulous mother-in-law gave me 4 pounds of kid mohair...you read right...4 pounds! I've been washing, picking and combing it and the final result is glorious! I've never much cared for mohair. Turns out that the cheap "mohair-like-fibre" in the bargain bin is NOT mohair at all! The real stuff is so soft and shiny!

And some close-ups:

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fibresnot.blogspot.com/2009/05/whew-it.html' title='Whew! I guess I just like the look and the fit better than a square heel. I've been asked about this heel many times and because I do it without thinking, I have a difficult time explaining it! I think saying "wrap the next stitch" confuses people. It's not really difficult, it's just a matter of seeing it and understanding it.

I decided that it might be helpful to demonstrate a wrapped stitch. This demo heel was knit in contrasting colours, so the wrapped stitches would be visible.

So let's see how this goes!

Knit to the last stitch:

Bring yarn forward:

Slip next stitch as if to purl:

Move yarn back:

With left hand needle, slip stitch back:

Completed wrap:

Turn your work:

Completed heel:

Voila! This post if for all the people pestering me! You know who your are.

Here are a few photos from Knitting Night:

First and foremost, Ms. KW learned to knit socks! For someone who wouldn't even finish a leg warmer, this is a huge step! She even has a STASH! Pretty good for someone who said they'd never knit again. Now if we can only get her short row heels in order!

Second, I'm sorry to say that poor Ms. VI had to be enrolled in remedial knitting. :( There were a couple of "incidents" that had the rest of us thinking that tape and glitter glue were more her speed. However, she surprised me by agreeing to knit a mitten. I'm a firm believer in having beginners knit mittens. It's a small project so it moves along quickly...and you learn almost everything you'll ever need to know! There's increases, decreases, stitches to pick up, knitting, purling and working in the round.

Well, Ms. VI dug in and worked away! Here she is knitting in the round for the first time and she even looks like she knows what she's doing! Next week we're gonna make her drop a stitch...ON PURPOSE! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

Ms. DC has been working away on mitts. To my great pleasure, she has thrown out the acrylic crap and gone back to using wool. Thank god! Here she's working on a pair of mittens for a Calgary Flames fan. How nice is that? Perhaps we'll get a photo of the finished project because they're pretty cool!

Ms. DP has been working away on a beautiful sweater in some kind of delightful yarn. I'm sorry I don't remember the name, but I think it's the yarn made from recycled Indian saris. So pretty! She's been alternating between this sweater and a lovely pair of socks made out of Kroy Stretch. I'm looking forward to the finished products!

And finally, there's me. Someone took my picture while I was knitting my lovely alpaca lace scarf...and because I'm vain, I'll include two photos!

I'm over coming my fear of lace knitting by forcing myself to just do it. So far I've chosen simple patterns with a maximum four row repeat. Anything more and my brain starts to melt! Anyway, this yarn is Alpaca Sox. I love it. It's soft and fuzzy and a beautiful colour!

Finally, we have two new additons to our little group of knitters. They're not particularly accomplished, but they're always entertaining!

Done!

2 pairs of mens' socks: done

3 pairs of ladies' socks: done

assorted mini socks for the Christmas tree: done

1 silk lace scarf: almost done

*Whew*

And not a moment to spare! Christmas starts tomorrow with my family, while Hubbo's family starts showing up Christmas Eve.

It should be noted that my fabulous Smooshy, Lorna's Laces, and Alpaca Sox yarn showed up two weeks ago and I've managed to ignore it...except for the occasional fond glance and gentle squeeze. Once this lace scarf is complete....look out!

Picking up my yarn parcel at the post office is a story in itself! I received a notice in the mail and knew my yarn was finally here! I had to wait an entire work day, but finally went to pick up my package. When I ordered this yarn, it didn't occur to me that the busiest post office week in history would soon be upon us.

I arrive at the postal outlet and there before me is a line of people a mile long, all looking decidedly unhappy. The poor girl working behind the counter looks tired and frazzled and she's practically standing on today's delivery of packages.

No problem, I think. A little quality "me" time...I'll just admire their fine assortment of cleaning products and fragranced bathroom sprays (it is a drug store, after all) and besides, there's YARN at the end of this line! After about 45 minutes, it's my turn and I hand the poor frazzled girl my postal notice. "Do you know how big this parcel is?" she asks.

Hmmmm...well, let's see, 6 or 8 skeins of yarn....ummmm..."No." is my reply. Of course, I'm Canadian so I add an apology in there somewhere.

The poor frazzled girl now has a young man helping her fetch parcels and she sends him off with my notice. Again, being Canadian and pathologically polite, I move to the side so others can continue with their pressing postal matters.

The now frazzled guy has been digging for my package for about 15 minutes...which is a long time when you're waiting for yarn and have a lot of grouchy people staring at the back of your head. I'm trying to read package labels which are upside down and fuzzy b/c I don't have my glasses...meaning, I'm no help. I know this poor frazzled guy wants me to say "Don't worry about it. I'll come back after Christmas when you're not so busy." However, there...is...YARN...involved! I'm not going anywhere! But I'm polite. "It's probably a really light package" I say helpfully.

At this point I run into my neighbour and we make polite small talk while they search for his package. His is located quickly and he looks at me, squeezes my arm and solemnly wishes me "Good luck" and walks away into the chilly evening.

I'm starting to get a bit worried at this point. The line behind me is getting longer and more restless and now both frazzled people behind the counter are looking for my yarn. Maybe it didn't make it to the postal outlet? Maybe the mail carrier noticed the shipping address and took it because they are a knitter too! Maybe it fell out of the truck and got run over and dirty! OMG!!!!!

"Found it!" says the frazzled girl! Yeah! All crazy thoughts leave my head as joy floods my psyche. I cuddle my package and shuffle out into the cold evening and head for home.

*Sigh*

I love new yarn.

My New Favorite Sites...

Just like everyone else, I have a list of sites and blogs that I visit every day or so. First of all, I had 2 1/2 glorious weeks of vacation! I love vacation time! I wish I could always be on vacation. I believe I need a sugar-daddy. But enough of that...

I was fortunate in that I was able to spend the entire day alone in the big city. I feared I would have to take Hubbo or the mother-in-law, neither of whom enjoy knitting stores, searching for new and exciting yarn or rummaging through Ikea.

I wanted to get to Shuttleworks bright and early, so I set off from Lacombe at about 8:00 am. Father-in-law graciously loaned me his GPS, into which Hubbo dutifully programmed the addresses of all the shops I wanted to hit. The weather was perfect and traffic was light. As I was driving along the highway that links Edmonton to Calgary, the sun came through the clouds and I could see the Rocky Mountains in the distance. I'm a prairie girl but seeing the mountains always takes my breath away!

I knew that Shuttleworks was on the south side of Calgary, somewhere out in the boondocks. The GPS kept me company by squawking directions at me..."Turn right at the next exit....bear left". At this point I "bear left" and the GPS tells me I've arrived at my destination. Unfortunately, I was sitting in the middle of dirt road with no yarn to be seen! Crap!

No problem, just take that exit up there and I'm sure it's around the corner. Ummm...nope...right back where I started...the middle of a dirt road. I decide to explore said dirt road and promptly drive up the hill. Hmmm...no yarn up here. Maybe down that side road....nope...horses...yarn doesn't come from horses. I get back to the top of the hill and use my trusty cell phone to call. I get voicemail saying they don't open until noon. Hmmm...no problem. Ikea it is!

I spent a couple of lovely hours snooping around Ikea, getting my life organized and fending off mothers with giant strollers. Then I headed back to Shuttleworks. I figure that now they'll have a sign out or something to guide me on my quest. I was wrong. After a phone call and several sets of poor directions...success! I found it!

The first thing that hits me is how well organized the place is! Then I notice that they carry Lamb's Pride! Never having seen this line of yarn in person, I took the time to undertake a thorough investigation! I finally settled on 3 shades of Wilefoote sock yarn. It's so soft and yummy!

Then I spied some drawers labelled "Silk". Hmmm... Upon opening the first drawer I nearly faint at the sight of skeins of gloriously coloured silk hanks! Then the owner says that there are more in the drawers below! Well! My brain went into overload! Eventually selected these:

I also purchased a lovely set of EZ Blocker wires and a set of wool combs. Because of my decidedly large purchase, I was entitled to a free tote bag. I love tote bags! What a fun place!

Upon my return to Lacombe, I had enough time to stop at The Crafty Lady, one of the best crafts stores I ever seen.

Every trip to Lacombe necessitates a visit! She carries the most amazing selection of yarn I've ever seen! I love it there and can usually spend a couple of hours nosing around! Here are my eventual purchases:

Once again, I received a tote bag. I love tote bags!

The next day, all of us headed into Red Deer and stopped at a yarn shop called The Wooly something or other. Here are a the results:

Then we headed to a really yummy Indian restaurant. The in-laws had never tried Indian so it was quite a treat for everyone!

While I had anticipated finishing several pairs of socks, I ended up working on a scarf made from Noro Kureyon sock yarn.

Detail:

I love the colours of this yarn but don't care of the texture. It's not a plied yarn, just a single and a bit rough and not as sturdy as most sock yarn. It has to be hand washed. I don't do that when it comes to socks! I thought perhaps a scarf would be more appropriate and I think it looks quite pretty!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Fibre Snot was officially added to the Knitting Blog Ring today! Hopefully, I'll be in Calgary for a day. That means that I'll be able to go to Shuttleworks! According to a few people in my spinning class, it's the mecca of fibre in the prairies! If their website is any indication, I'm in for a treat. Soooo excited! I can't wait. I'm also going to try and hit Gina Brown's, a knitting shop highly recommended by a friend who's a native of Calgary.

I've consulted google maps and I've got my route all planned. I plan to come back with all kinds of treasures. But don't tell hubbo! He thinks I have more than enough yarn to last me through armageddon!

Since we are driving, I'll also be able to knit the entire way there and back. It usually takes me about 2 hours of dedicated knitting per sock, so that means I should be able to complete ...*calculating*...about 3 pairs on the road. Hmmm...that sounds pretty good! Then there's down time during the visit which could result in another pair at least. Either I'll be very proud of myself upon my return and/or crippled! What we won't do for the love of sticks and string!

Knitting Night - October 8, 2008

Knitting Night was held at my place this week. I've tried and tried but I just can't seem to knit lace! I mentioned my current project, the Surplice Camisole, in a previous post. It's pretty. It's easy. The lace portion has a two row repeat. "No problem" I think. " Even I can knit two rows!"

Wrong!

After picking up 90 stitches, working the foundation row where I increase one stitch to 91, I start. I complete one two row repeat and I now have 88 stitches. What? 88? Impossible. I know I have a short attention span, but how can I lose 3 stitches in 2 rows? Ahhhhhh!

So I "unknit" stitch by stitch for 2 rows. Nope did everything correctly, I think. But now I've managed to drop several more stitches. @#$$%%$#%^! I can't take it! I ripped everything out and stuffed the project back in my knitting bag.

I've been knitting for over 10 years...I can complete a pair of socks in 2 days (when I put my mind to it). I can do intarsia (albeit slowly and with much swearing) and complicated aran patterns (without a cable needle! Not that I'm bragging). What's so different about lace?

Maybe it IS my limited attention span. Maybe it's because I'm used to knitting in front of tv and movies. I don't usually have to watch what I'm doing. Maybe I need to lock myself in another room and try to concentrate for more than 30 seconds.

So here I am again, relegated to "practicing" a pattern before I put it into the actual project. Granted, I've ended up with some pretty nice scarves as gifts from this practice, but really! Some days I feel like I've had a stroke!

Here's my Practice Project. I'm trying to work with lace weight alpaca. It's beautiful, soft stuff (I looooooove alpaca), but it's like anything with the word "lace" attached freaks me out. Maybe I need a valium and a therapist!

Last night, after several attempts, I managed to finish 2 rows.

*sigh*

Knitting Night

Tonight was the first official Knitting Night of the season! It's always so much fun to hang out with the girls and talk about yarn and patterns! Love it!

I'm very proud of one of the ladies. She learned to knit socks over the summer! She's an excellent knitter, so I knew it wouldn't be a challenge for her...but she knit a mitered heel on her first try! I feel like a proud mother! *sniff*

However, I did have one moment of shock and despair. My sister reaches into her knitting bag and pulls out..... (wait for it)....a giant ball of acrylic! Gak! Have I taught you nothing? "What. Is. That?" I asked. "That's an abomination!"

Well, she's knitting a pair of mitts for football games in the local team colours and decided she didn't want to spend money on decent yarn. So she's knitting away and suddenly (and loudly) proclaims "Acrylic sucks!". Hah! Didn't I tell you? Some people just never learn. Hope she enjoys those scratchy, stiff, nasty things at the next game. For godsake, don't come in contact with an open flame! Even funnier, her boyfriend is allergic to polyester! I wonder if that includes any fibres extruded from vat of petroleum by-products? Sounds fun.

Socks

I started knitting socks about six years ago. Up until that time, I only knit with chunky yarn and swore I'd never knit with anything else! Then I saw an ad for Fortissima Socka Colori in a magazine an thought "WOW! That's the coolest thing ever!"

"Self patterning yarn? That's the coolest thing I've ever seen! Gimme some of that!" I said and immediately ran out and bought some. Only problem was, I didn't have a pattern. I know I found several patterns on the web, but for the life of me I can't remember where. I eventually bought a sock pattern booklet and began fighting with double pointed needles, which I'd never used before.

The part I remember best, is trying to Kitchener stitch the toe! Holy hell! I thought I'd had a stroke! Here I was...so close to finishing my first sock...and I can't...figure out...this...*bleeping *...Kitchener stitch! Aaaahhhhhhh! I'd stitch a few, then rip it out, then yell at Hubbo, then try again and repeat. After about six panic attacks and a near divorce, I finally locked myself in a bedroom and figured it out and I didn't look back.

That summer, I knit 18 pairs...but not a single pair for me. Over the past six years, I can't count the number of socks I've knit, but I've only managed to keep 2 pairs for myself. Well last night I finished pair #3! (for me!) While it's not really too exciting that I finished a pair of socks, it is exciting that I got to where a pair of my own to work today! Yeah!

Stash Containment - Part II

Yeah!!

Project Stash Containment is almost complete! All of my yarn is safely stashed in one location, easily accessible and readily viewable! For me, storage is all about visibility. "Out of sight, out of mind" is my constant battle cry! I've also added a large basket for roving and handspun.

Stash sorting is quite dangerous, I've found. "Ooooh! I forgot I had that! It's so pretty! That would make a great....." You see where I'm going with this. I already have 15-17 projects on needles (fewer than I thought), so I certainly don't need anymore. My New Year's resolution for 2007 was to get everything off needles. That was more than a year and a half ago. Pretty sure I've added projects, not completed any. Oh well... one battle at a time.

*Yeah!*

Everything has a home!

Now I need to sew something to hold all of my needles, especially circular. It wasn't until I moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1997, that the addiction started. A friend of mine was a huge knitter and gave me a very sage piece of advice. "Why put all that work into something and use crap yarn?"

Since that fateful day, I've been a Fibre Snot. I love fibre...all kinds...wool, alpaca, cotton, llama, silk, cashmere (who doesn't?).

A few months ago, in a state of delerium, I purchased a nice little spinning wheel from a lovely lady in America. Three weeks later, my little Baynes wheel arrived from New Zealand. Of course I wanted to put it together immediately but my darling hubbo made me take it out to the shop for sanding, staining, more staining, more staining, sealing, more sealing, even more sealing and finally, assembly. It was the longest 5 days of my life!

I've never been so in love with an inanimate object! I spin while watching cheesy movies with Hubbo, I spin while sitting on the deck, I spin before I'm fully awake in the morning, I spin when I'm aching at night. I love it! The only time I'm not spinning is when I'm setting the twist in a new skein, knitting, surfing the web for spinning and knitting links and supplies and when I'm at work. It's a shame that "work" has to cut into my fibre time!

I've decided that since I spend so much time thinking about fibre, playing with fibre, stalking fibre online (you know you've done it too!), I might as well blog about fibre! We'll see how it goes. I must confess, I'm concerned about the amount of time this blogging-thing will take away from my ever growing stash. We'll just have to see how it goes!

Cheers!
